NO WAY   :) Support NOW's Work | March 20, 2010 | Tell a Friend Take Action! http://www.now.org/issues/health/031910stupak.html All NOW Actions http://www.now.org/actions/ Action needed: Call Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and President Obama CALL NOW Pelosi: 202-225-4965 Hoyer: 202-225-3130 White House: 202-456-1111 After taking action, please support our work! Action Needed: Credible rumors have it that the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate are cutting a deal with Rep. Bart Stupak to insert the Stupak-Pitts Amendment into the health care bill at the last minute. TAKE ACTION NOW! We must pull out all the stops to prevent this deal from becoming a reality. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call and email Nancy Pelosi's office. AmericanVoices@mail.house.gov (Yes, do both -- her number is 202-225-4965) Tell her the National Organization for Women's chapters, leaders and activists will move heaven and earth to mount a primary challenge to each and every legislator who got elected claiming to be pro-choice and then turned around and voted for a health care bill under the cloud of a deal with Bart Stupak. 2. Call Steny Hoyer's office and tell him the same thing -- his number is 202-225-3130. But also tell Rep. Hoyer that we are appalled by his cavalier assurance to pro-choice legislators that the women's groups won't mind if the Stupak-Pitts amendment is enacted at the last minute. Tell him that, to the contrary, women's groups mind so much that we will focus on mounting a primary challenge to his re-election in 2010, and failing that, until we get the job done. 3. Call President Barack Obama (either at 202-456-1111, the comments line, or the switchboard at 202-456-1414) and demand that he veto any health care bill passed under the cloud of a deal with Bart Stupak. Remind the president that hopeful, progressive women's votes got him elected, and that we expect him to stand up for the women of this country -- not to look the other way while Congress makes back room deals that could drive women to back alleys! If the Stupak-Pitts Amendment becomes law, it will deal the worst blow to reproductive health rights in decades. Don't let this happen. Show our leaders how critical this issue is to so many. What Could Happen if Stupak-Pitts Becomes Law? Low- and moderate-income women could be completely prevented from accessing abortion. Who has money to purchase a so-called additional "abortion rider"? Who would even plan to need an "abortion rider"? Middle-income women could be severely restricted in accessing abortion -- even if they are using some or all of their own money to pay for private insurance. Private insurance companies that currently cover abortion could be discouraged from doing so entirely -- because they will have to modify their plans to participate in proposed health exchanges. We could face new exclusionary battles over birth control and other forms of reproductive health care coverage in the future. Remember, the supporters of Stupak-Pitts oppose contraception as well as abortion rights. Find more information at www.now.org and check back frequently for updates. Thank you for taking action!

Last night we learned that Rep. Bart Stupak filed a new resolution in his effort to ban abortion coverage. He and his allies are threatening to bring down the entire healthcare reform bill unless they get their way. Word on the Hill is that House leaders are considering striking a deal with Stupak. This is completely unacceptable. The House should not cave to the whims of one man's anti-choice crusade. Healthcare reform cannot be won at the expense of women's reproductive rights. Tell Democratic Majority Leader Hoyer and Majority Whip Clyburn to reject any anti-choice deals with Rep. Stupak. http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hcr10lcss_af/xkwgn62a7jix7wn?qp_source=hcr10lcss%5fe1%5faf
We need your help, and we need it now.

Right now, congressional negotiations over the final details of the health care reform bill are going on behind closed doors - and Congressman Bart Stupak is still insisting that the final bill include his total ban on private health insurance coverage for abortion. Yes, one man is holding health care reform hostage. His goal: dictating the kind of health insurance coverage tens of millions of women will receive under reform.

Tell House Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Majority Whip James Clyburn to reject any last-minute anti-choice deal.

Since Rep. Stupak won't quit, neither can we - and we don't have much time before the final vote to make ourselves heard. james m, send a message to two key members of the Democratic leadership - Rep. Hoyer and Rep. Clyburn - right now. Tell them not to make any last-minute anti-choice deals with Rep. Stupak.

American women cannot live with the Stupak amendment. No "ifs," "ands," or "buts."

It's time for Congress to stop Stupak in his tracks and do the job they were sent to Washington to do: extend health care coverage to the millions of uninsured. Tell the Democratic leadership to say "NO" to any last-minute anti-choice deals with Rep. Stupak. Say "NO" to any new restrictions on coverage for abortion.

This is our last chance. Tell Rep. Hoyer and Rep. Clyburn to side with women who need health care - not Rep. Stupak and his anti-choice cronies.

Thank you so very much for all you do for the women, men, and teens who rely on Planned Parenthood. I'll keep you posted on what's next. Sincerely,

Cecile Richards, President

**Health Insurance Reform - Ask Your Rep. to Vote Yes**

The House and Senate have found a way forward through the procedural morass and could vote on health insurance reform in the next few days. The president could have a bill on his desk to sign by Monday.

Is the bill perfect? No.
Is it complicated? Yes.
Is it an historic bill that will significantly improve the lives of millions? Yes.
Should Congress pass health insurance reform? Yes.

The legislation will extend insurance coverage to 30 million people who do not now have access to comprehensive health care and does not preclude further changes in the health care system.

Our FCNL lobbyists have also heard that the "public option" -- a health insurance plan managed by government -- may be back on the table. FCNL strongly supports a public option as a way to keep costs down and quality up in the marketplace.

*Take Action*

The vote in the House is expected to be very close. Please call your representative to ask her or him to vote for the health insurance reform bill: http://action.fcnl.org/r/127719/46386/0. Enter your zip code on our website to find the phone number for your representative and talking points for your call: http://action.fcnl.org/r/127720/46386/0.

*More Information*

The bill will include at least these positive features:

*No one can be excluded or charged a higher premium due to a pre-existing condition, genetic code, or high usage of health services.
*No one can be ejected from a plan for using its services.
*Women cannot be charged higher premiums than men.
*Medicaid expands substantially to cover many more low income individuals and families.
*Low to moderate income families can qualify for tax credits to help with premium costs.

What are the concerns raised by members of Congress about the bill? Some members may reject the bill because it makes a smaller change in our health care system than they originally sought. Some are wary of costs to consumers and to the government, even though the Congressional Budget Office has advised Congress that this legislation will save money - for families and for the country. Finally, a number of members reject this outcome for partisan political reasons that have very little to do with the content of the bill.

The details of the health insurance reform process are changing quickly. Check back on our website for the latest news: http://action.fcnl.org/r/127721/46386/0.
