That is the question asked by the Air America Street Team yesterday to the citizens of New York. See what they had to say and then leave your answer in the comments.

Well, while Im not surprised that most folks would choose women of status and money since thats how they percieve power, I would have to say that the most powerfull women in the world let alone america are, indeed, the mothers...Simply because they weld so much influence over their children that the next generation can literaly be made or broken by that influence.

Of course, getting right down to it...Fathers have just as much power.

Interesting that nobody mentioned Nancy Pelosi, who has considerable power and is two heartbeats away from the Presidency.  Ruth Bader Ginsburg is another truly powerful woman, as are a number of private-sector CEOs.  Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey have very little power and a great deal of influence.  Women would have more power if more of them appreciated the difference.

i think RBG is indeed very powerful... i'm in agreement there.

i am also surprised that no one mentioned any of the high powered female CEOs... but i suppose that might be because most people don't know who meg whitman is. although i wouldn't go so far as to say she is the most powerful.

also, it really does depend on how you define power. i think doug misses a couple of points on oprah. she motivates the masses like no one else. she was an early supporter (and friend) of the president. she caused an epic run on KFCs. she sends books to the top of the bestseller lists by merely mentioning them. she runs a media empire that spans from NYC to Chicago to LA and beyond. she has prominent placement in every sphere of american cultural life. even more importantly, people trust her opinion. oprah can make or break you.

    that's real power, imo.

I tried to make my own choice before watching the video, so it was no shock to see my two most powerful women were on the list: Oprah & Michelle Obama.
