Baltimore Pregnancy Centers Forced to Tell the Truth

Published November 24, 2009 @ 04:23PM PT

When I was editor of my college's progressive newspaper, some of the enterprising female journalists on staff wanted to find out first-hand whether crisis pregnancy centers were as bad as we'd heard. So two staffers went undercover to our local CPC, posing as a pregnant teen and her worried friend, to satisfy our curiosity.

The short answer: yes, they are that bad.

Under the guise of offering comprehensive reproductive health services, crisis pregnancy centers lure in women trying to decide what to do about an unplanned pregnancy. These (often young) women mistakenly believe that the fake pregnancy center, like a Planned Parenthood, will provide them with information on the full range of options available to them. Instead, they generally find themselves subjected to a mix of religious guilt-tripping (in our college investigation, the pretend-pregnant journalist was asked if she'd tried "crying out to God") and outright lies to keep them from considering an abortion -- a service crisis pregnancy centers don't actually offer in any case.

So kudos to Baltimore for passing a bill mandating that pregnancy centers that do not provide abortion information post a sign in their waiting rooms making this fact clear, so that women who want a real understanding of all their options can get out while the getting's good.

Pregnancy centers -- and the Catholic Church -- in the city are crying foul, claiming that this constitutes harassment, but City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blakes points out that all compliance with the law takes is printing a basic sign off of a computer. She further states, "It doesn't say anything other than what is true about the centers."

But CPCs don't want women knowing the truth upfront -- because then they miss their chance to let their fake counselors get their claws into these vulnerable women. They miss their chance to feed women seeking information lies about the impact of abortion on mental and physical health; to show them graphic, scientifically unsound antiabortion videos; and to insist that they are killing a life. They also miss their chance to use delay tactics, such as withholding test results, to keep women from having an abortion until it is too late.

I'm okay with them missing that chance.

Re: The Baltimore Crisis Preg. Center article- From what I've always seen as the way they are advertised in the phonebook, these Crisis Pregnancy Centers are under the heading "Abortion Alternatives" & in most cases, are sponsored by a Catholic/Evangelical organization. At any rate, seems obvious to me if I WANTED to find a way to keep a crisis pregnancy I couldn't afford, I'd go there 1st. But if I DIDN'T, why would I step foot in that (Center)? This being an issue confuses me.

Essentially, the Baltimore law amounts to nothing more than a truth-in-advertising statement. Of course, these 'fake' help centers are upset. They know deceit is in their favor and against the idea of presenting all options equally, in an unbiased way and letting women decide for themselves.

From what I've always understood, a Crisis Preg. Center's whole objective is to PRESERVE the unplanned pregnancy if somone is in poverty/underage, but has chosen to continue their pregnancy anyway. Oftentimes, they counsel the girl/woman about the option of giving the child up for adoption, finding social services to provide healthcare, etc. Naturally, they wouldn't encourage the abortion option, since they are in business to save lives, not terminate them.

Christine, the problem with crisis pregnancy centers is that they do not necessarily advertise as "abortion alternatives," or make their religious affiliation clear upfront, they frequently simply advertise as a place for women with unplanned pregnancies to go for counseling. Too often, women don't realize that the center does not include abortion information as an option.

If this wasn't an issue, the pregnancy centers affected by Baltimore's new law wouldn't be pushing back--if women already knew that CPCs did not provide information on abortion, why would it be such a problem to put up a piece of paper in the waiting room pointing that fact out?

If these groups are honest about what they are and really to help people in need who have already chosen to keep the pregnancy, then they're providing a positive service. However, the way it often plays out is that they use deceit to impose their preference on women who come to them expecting truthful, comprehensive counseling.

We did our undercover visits when fake clinics were still allowed to be listed in the yellow pages along with real, legitimate clinics. The staff was trained to be professional liars and preachers. They were the furthest from legitimate counselors or real service providers.

It is so typical that they would object to requirements to be slightly honest and post an accurate sign about their "pregnancy care center." Our role-playing "mommy" eventually told them that she was going to get an abortion. Coincidently, late-night telephone harassement and threats began almost immediately. Rev. Bookburn - Radio Volta

I'd like to see such an undercover investigation done at 'Planned Parenthood' - where the 'plan' is to not be a 'parent'.

Formed by Margret Sanger - the Progressive, Eugenicist who Hitler claims as an inspiration... Abortion was one more means of reducing and controlling Blacks, and poor Irish.

I'm sure you saved those late night phone messages and have them posted for us to bear witness... and I'm sure you suoght prosecution of these individuals, too.

This one cuts both ways.  My wife and I were unemployed last year, we found ourselves unemployed, uninsured, and my wife pregnant.  So what did we do, being responsible individuals we tried to find low-cost health care that would at least allow us to float for a few more months until the bills really start to come rolling in.

My wife called quite a few centers advertised in the papers, one I can remember was called the "Charlotte Pregnancy Care Center", all of whom advertised prenatal care ranging from pregnancy tests to birthing classes.  Long story short every one my wife called was an abortion clinic and every one was unwilling to offer any service other than an abortion.  One woman told my wife that we were irresponsible and I quote "should call back once we grow up and make the right decision [to have an abortion]" (even though the child was conceived while we were insured and gainfully employed).  Time after time my wife called and every center refused to offer anything but an abortion.

Even the blatant lie of "every child a wanted child" falls short here.  We loved our child, and unfortunately we lost him late in the second term.  For all the high and mighty claims that clinics help women, they exist for one purpose, to push an agenda and encourage abortions.  Fake "undercover visits" are just that, fake.  Fake circumstances, fake actresses, fake emotions.  What is real is the fact that a family who wanted a child was treated like idiots and irresponsible children for daring to actually love the child we had made and the "bleeding hearts" only bleed for those who think like they do.  Show love for your unborn child and you are shoved out the door until you "grow up".

I have always been pro-life but I had always given the other side the benefit of the doubt, assuming that they were just well-meaning but misinformed.  I no longer believe that, instead the abortion industry proved itself to be just that, an organization bent on profiting from vulnerable women.  After all if they went after my wife like that for being pregnant when simply unemployed what would a call with a single pregnant woman with no support be like?

Feeling my blood pressure starting to lower I think I'm going to try and wrap this rant up.  I choose to boil this down to motivation.  Are there pro life groups out there who try to keep women from having abortions, of course.  That motive is easy to understand based on the beliefs of the people running the organizations.  What motivates someone to try to get a woman, who wants to care for her unborn child and give it the best care she can while it's developing, to get an abortion?  On top of that using hard sell techniques to try to get her to change her mind once she has stated that she want to have her baby but just wants help making sure it is healthy.  What is that other than greed and... well something just plain evil.

I'm sorry if my language offends but this is my family, not some abstract statistic.
