Could Carrie Bradshaw Have Survived the 1930s Dating Scene?

Published October 29, 2009 @ 11:46AM PT

If you're a single girl in her twenties like me - or ever have been - you know that dating can often be full of trials and tribulations. It is often a petty, guessing game of who likes who more (or less) and a jigsaw puzzle of emotions, coy remarks and the never ending "chase" to get a man (or woman depending on your sexual orientation).

But, no matter how many episodes of Sex in the City I need to watch in order to try and understand my new dating life in New York City, I will always know that things could have been a LOT worse.

Just take a look at this photo gallery: A Single Girl's Guide To Dating. It's from the 1938 issue of Parade Magazine - even Carrie Bradshaw would have had to learn a few new tricks to be able to survive during this time period:

Barbie Goes To The Box Office

Published September 27, 2009 @ 02:08PM PT

Big news everyone. Your favorite plastic piece of pop culture is going to hit the big screen. Yep, that's right, after 50 years of being seen as nothing more than a play toy, Barbie is finally getting a movie contract.

Melissa Silverstein over at Women and Hollywood shares the news:

Universal finally got Mattel to make a deal. Mattel has held onto the brand for a long time (50 years), and now that there are so many high concept movies being made out of characters they probably felt that the time was right to get in the game.

While Hollywood has tried to make every female star look like a Barbie, it is going to be amusing to see what Hollywood does with the "real thing." Will Universal try and shove the blond bimbo stereotype down our throats once more or will they modernize the vintage view of female perfection?

If you were writing the script for "Barbie: The Movie" what would it be about? Would she get the dream house, marry Ken and live happily ever after? Or should Mattel use this opportunity to work with Universal and create a more realistic vision of Barbie's world?

Just A Reminder...

Men do the finances and women pick out clothes and watch the children! [insert sarcasm]

Yet another funny example of female and male gender roles as of 40 years ago. But just think of how far we have come - women can do more than shop and take care of children, men can do more than study the family finances, and the internet has evolved beyond a bunch of clunky boxes into sleek mobile operating systems! Phew. Thank god I am living in 2009.
